While physical preparation and the right gear are crucial, it’s equally important to be aware of medical issues that may arise during your Kilimanjaro trek. From altitude sickness to dehydration, being prepared will keep you healthy and improve your chances of reaching the summit.
1. Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness – AMS)
Altitude sickness is the most common medical concern when climbing Kilimanjaro. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. The best way to reduce your risk is to acclimatize properly and choose a route that allows for a slow ascent, such as the Lemosho or Northern Circuit Route.
2. Dehydration and Nutrition
The high altitude and physical exertion can lead to rapid dehydration. It’s essential to drink at least 3–4 liters of water daily. Pack electrolyte supplements and eat nutrient-rich foods that support energy and recovery.
