Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa
Pilanesberg, including more than 55,000 hectares (135,908 acres), is the fourth-largest game reserve in South Africa. It is among the premier Big 5 game reserves near Johannesburg and one of the most accessible safari parks in the country.
Pilanesberg National Park is situated in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province inside a transitional vegetation zone. It serves as the convergence of the arid Kalahari Desert and the humid Lowveld biomes. Consequently, a diverse array of animal, plant, and avian species inhabit this locale. Pilanesberg National Park hosts nearly all of Southern Africa’s wildlife, include endangered and rare species such as African wild dogs and roan, sable, and tsessebe antelopes. All five of the Big Five species (elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, and the elusive leopard) inhabit Pilanesberg. The national park has cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, jackals, wild cats, and other antelopes. Additionally, around 360 avian species have been documented in Pilanesberg National Park.
The North West Parks Board administers the Pilanesberg National Park, a provincial reserve. An intriguing aspect of the national park is that it was established within a crater formed by a volcanic eruption millions of years ago.
