Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park | The park is named after the Murchison Falls, which also draw tourists from all over the world to this stunning region of Uganda. But the magnificent terrain, variety of ecosystems, and tremendous biodiversity are what keep people there and frequently entice them to return time and time again. There is always more to learn about Uganda than what first appears.

Murchison falls National park.

A Brief History of Murchison Falls

“The water fall was snow-white, which created a wonderful effect as it contrasted with the black cliffs that surrounded the water. The scene was further enhanced by graceful tropic palms and wild plantains. The Nile’s largest waterfall was this one. – Samuel Baker, an adventurer, wrote in 1864.

The neighboring national park’s wildlife populations are currently recovering well from the depredations of the 1970s and 1980s, solidifying the Park’s position as one of Uganda’s most popular tourist attractions. The view has remained as stunning over the past 150 years.

Murchison, which was first established as a wildlife reserve in 1926, became one of Uganda’s first national parks in 1952 and presently occupies 3,840 square kilometres, making it the nation’s largest protected area. It is located where the Bunyoro Escarpment drops into the lowland plains of the savannah at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley.

The overpopulation of animals in Murchison in the 1960s led to the culling of elephants and hippos in an effort to control large herbivore use. The years of civil conflict offered their own remedy and caused a drastic decline in all species’ populations.

However, many populations have recovered significantly thanks to peace and a realization of the importance of tourism. Elephant populations are booming, the park is home to the greatest Rothschild giraffe population in the world (only found in Murchison and Kidepo), and both the buffalo and Ugandan kob populations are expanding. There are thought to be 200 lions in all, distributed among 20 prides, and occasionally even leopards are spotted.

The largest national park in Uganda is Murchison Falls National Park. It is situated in the Murchison conservation Area, 305 kilometers north of Kampala, the country’s capital. Amazing Bugungu and Karuma Wildlife Reserves are located in the Murchison Conservation Area. The Victoria Nile pushes through a small gorge to form the Murchison Falls, which are its most famous feature. It is located in northwest Uganda along the beaches of Lake Albert. There are two ways to get to Murchison Falls National Park and that is  by plane and by vehicle.

By car, it will take you around 5 hours to reach the park on asphalt roads, stopping along the way at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. If you prefer to travel by air, you may fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Pakuba Airfield, where a guide will meet you and drive you to the park. Primate species like baboons and monkeys, 450 bird species, 23 of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift, including the rare shoebill stork, 76 mammal species, such as bush bucks, Uganda kobs, water bucks, warthogs, giraffes, hyenas, hippos, and crocodiles found along the shores of the Nile River, among many others, can all be found in.

Murchison Falls National Park sits on the floor of Albertine rift valley on the shores of Lake Albert and at 3,840km is the father of and largest national park in Uganda. Murchison Falls was gazetted a game reserve in 1926 and promoted into a national park in 1952. Murchison Falls is rich in biodiversity in both flora and fauna consisting close to 109 species of mammals, 451 birds, 145 tree species, many fish, reptile and insect species. It is one of the four protected areas in Uganda dominated by savannah grassland vegetation besides other types of vegetation like grassland forests, water vegetation on the shores of water bodies and equatorial rain forest forms her southern boundaries. The Victoria Nile which plunges 45m over the remnant rift valley wall creating the dramatic Murchison Falls, from which the park gets its name is a prominent feature and all wildlife sustain their lifeline from her.
The safaris into Uganda are entirely complete when one has taken a game drive in the park to view predators on the hunt for game and the prey taking maximum caution to survive. The short savannah grassland dotted with borassus palms and scattered acacia tree with lots of birds of all colours painting the skies are a remarkable sight. Four of the Big 5 giant mammals (lions, elephants, buffalos and leopard) are permanent residents and roam freely in the park in addition to giraffes, the longest land mammal.
Take a safari into Uganda and visit Murchison Falls National Park the setting scene in which the 1950s blockbuster movie; “The African Queen” was shot from. It has never lost little of that touch; the rhinos that were hunted to extinction during the turbulent times of Uganda 1970s.

Introduction To Murchison falls National Park

The Murchison Falls In The Game Park

The Nile River cuts through the park. The renowned rainbow seen in so many images is created as the Nile, which is flowing west into Lake Albert, squeezes through an 8-meter opening and plunges 45 meters over the remaining Rift Valley wall down into the appropriately named “Devil’s Cauldron.”

The Falls mark the end of an 80-kilometer stretch of rapids before the Nile opens up into a wide, calm river that flows into Lake Albert and a far-reaching voyage to the north.

The best way to get to the Falls is through a two-part excursion that starts with a boat safari on the Nile, where you can see elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, Nile crocodile, and aquatic birds on the shore or in the shallows, and then continues with a 30-minute hike around the cliffs to the head of the Falls.

The Lake Albert delta, one of the greatest spots in Uganda to watch the renowned Shoebill storks, is reached by sailing west rather than east to the Falls. Murchison is a terrific area to go fishing if you like to be more active on the water. There are numerous destinations that provide specialized excursions.

Wildlife In Murchison Falls National Park

Game drives in the Buligi Peninsula’s savannah grasslands and riverine woods offer fantastic opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and Ugandan kob antelope. Only rhinos are absent, but those will be replaced by rhinos from the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, according to the growing sightings of leopard. The Budongo Forest Reserve is a paradise for birders and a fantastic place to look for chimpanzees in the park’s woody south. Even though most guests only stay in Murchison for two or three nights, it is possible to stay for much longer and yet feel unfulfilled.

This recently opened area of the park was created with the goal of reducing the amount of visitor strain on Buligi. The dry season from December to February is also substantially hotter, with average high temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius.

The dry season forces species to congregate around water sources, creating concentrated sightings, as it does for much of Africa. The highest bird population density and the fewest visitors are observed during the rainier months.

Boat Safaris In Murchison falls National Park

Falls River Safaris

The boat ride from Paraa to the Falls is what people associate with Murchison. This can take up to three hours to travel back, and is best experienced in the late afternoon when the western sun illuminates the spray. Or, your driver-guide can meet you at the Falls and take you on a road trip back to your resort. When you stay on the south bank, this works really well.

Either a double-deck boat or a smaller motor cruiser makes the boat ride a majestic procession. You will pass near to the river bank while pleasantly seated and free of any of the bumps that come with game drives, where you may observe the huge mammals, crocodiles, and wildlife that frequent the shoreline. It’s amazing to observe a six-ton bull elephant drinking from just a few meters away while it’s completely at ease.

It is simply too unsafe for the boats to halt at the base of the Falls themselves. Instead, guests disembark at the bottom of a cliff for those who wish to climb to the summit. After being greeted by a guide, you proceed to go through a riverine forest, along a cliff edge, and up onto the break of the Falls, stopping at various vistas along the way. You may undoubtedly get wet from the spray, but the experience is well worth it.

Lake Albert Delta River Safari

The Lake Albert Delta river safari is in many respects an extension of the Falls cruise experience, but with the Delta as your destination. You travel downstream at this period, which is frequently in the morning. There is a good probability that you will witness Shoebill storks as well as other sizable groups of water birds.

Although comparable to the Falls cruise, the experience is more than just seeing wildlife. Moving from the river to the lake’s broad open waters is a very unique feeling that makes for some beautiful photos.

The eight exquisitely constructed, contemporary thatched bandas at the Nile Safari Lodge, which was recently restored, offer the greatest views.

Budongo Eco Lodge
