Are there more gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda? – As of the latest available data in 2024, Uganda has more mountain gorillas than Rwanda, though the difference isn’t vast. Here’s a breakdown:

Mountain Gorilla Population

Mountain gorillas are found in the wild in the Virunga Mountains across three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The majority of the population lives in Uganda and Rwanda, with a smaller portion in the DRC.

  1. Uganda:
Uganda is home to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where the largest portion of the mountain gorilla population resides. As of recent estimates, there are about 600 mountain gorillas in Uganda.
  2. Rwanda:
Rwanda’s gorillas are mainly found in the Volcanoes National Park in the northern part of the country. Rwanda is home to around 400-450 mountain gorillas.

Key Points

  • Uganda has the largest population of mountain gorillas, with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park being one of the best places to see them.
  • Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is also a top destination for gorilla trekking and has an important population of mountain gorillas, though slightly fewer than Uganda.
  • Together, the total population of mountain gorillas is just over 1,000 individuals, and both Uganda and Rwanda have made significant strides in conservation, with numbers steadily increasing over the past few decades.

While Uganda has a higher number of gorillas, Rwanda’s park system is also renowned for its well-managed gorilla trekking experience, and it is easier to access for many travelers, particularly due to the country’s infrastructure and tourism services.

Both countries are considered safe and excellent for gorilla trekking, and both play a critical role in the ongoing conservation of these endangered animals.

“Gorilla trekking is more than a safari — it’s a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the importance of protecting our natural world.”
