Nyakagezi gorilla family: The Nyakagezi gorilla family is a prominent group of mountain gorillas residing in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in southwestern Uganda. This family is unique due to its stable and intimate size, dynamic history, and significance in the conservation of mountain gorillas. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the greater Virunga Massif, shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Nyakagezi family is the only habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, making it the centerpiece of gorilla trekking in the area. This group has gained recognition for its cross-border movements between Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC.
However, in recent years, the Nyakagezi family settled in Uganda, which has offered consistent opportunities for tourists to experience the wonders of gorilla trekking as well as golden monkey trekking.
The Nyakagezi family is smaller compared to some other gorilla groups, which provides visitors with an intimate trekking experience. As of recent reports, the group comprises about 10 members.
Nyakagezi gorilla family permits: You can book your gorilla trekking permit with us, where you can contact us via our emails or contacts shown on our websites, or you can reach out directly to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for your permit bookings and any other information you will need.
The Nyakagezi family resides in the dense forests and bamboo zones of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, situated on the slopes of Virunga volcanoes. These gorillas thrive in the park’s high-altitude environment, feeding on a diet primarily consisting of bamboo shoots, fruits, leaves, and occasional insects.
The Nyakagezi family displays typical gorilla behaviors, marked by their strong social bonds and structured hierarchy.
The Nyakagezi family is a critical part of efforts to conserve the endangered mountain gorillas, who face threats like habitat destruction, disease, and poaching. The government plays a vital role in funding conservation, supporting local communities, and fostering global awareness.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, as well as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, benefits significantly from gorilla trekking tourism. The revenue generated from trekking permits is reinvested into anti-poaching efforts, habitat preservation, and improving infrastructure.
Visitors who trek to see the Nyakagezi family describe the experience as life-changing. Trekking begins with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a guided hike through the park’s breathtaking terrain. The trek, which can last from a few hours or more, culminates in an hour spent observing the gorillas.
In summary, visitors get a rare chance to interact with one of the most endangered animals in the world while also helping to ensure its future thanks to their presence at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The family is a highlight of Uganda’s wildlife tourism and a treasure for biodiversity worldwide because of its dynamic history, small size, and enchanting members.
