Uganda gorilla trek and safaris

Gorilla trekking in Africa is one of the number one activity that tourist engage in throughout the year in the world. The gentle giant rare and endangered mountain gorillas surviving in their natural habitat are only found in three African countries in the world. Uganda is one of those African countries that is a home for the mountain gorillas and it is a habitat for the largest population of the endangered mountain gorillas of the three countries. The rest of the countries are Rwanda known as the land for seven hills and the democratic republic of Congo.

The population since 2010 it has increased from 786 to 880 mountain gorilla species according to the current census conducted by the Uganda wildlife authority. Out of the 880 mountain gorillas, 400 gorilla species survive in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and 440 gorilla species survive in the Virunga massif. The Virunga massif is a conservation area for Mgahinga national park of Uganda, Virunga national park of Congo and volcanoes national park of Rwanda.

Uganda is ranked as the number one destination that receives the biggest number of visitors per year coming to do gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is famously and best done in Bwindi impenetrable forest national as it has the largest population of gorilla families compared to Mgahinga national park. Both national parks are located in the south western part of Uganda.

Where do gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda can either be done in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park or Mgahinga national park located is the south western part of the region.

Uganda has 18 habituated gorilla families, 17 habituated gorilla families are found in the different sectors of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and only one gorilla group is found in Mgahinga national park.

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park has four sectors that are a home for the 17 habituated gorilla families. Each of these sectors has its own gorilla families and accommodation facilities ranging from budget, mid-range and luxury facilities

How much does gorilla trekking cost?

Gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs 600 USD per person for any of the national parks and gorilla habituation costs 1500 USD. The price is inclusive of park entry fees, UWA Ranger guide and the trekking activity.

The gorilla trekking permit is issued to a person who is above 15 years of age and a person below 15 years is not allowed trekking as he/she is considered a child.

The Uganda gorilla trekking permit is sold at the Uganda wildlife authority (UWA) headquarters offices in Kampala only. UWA is issues out gorilla trekking permits for both Bwindi and Mgahinga national park.

How to access Bwindi and Mgahinga national park?

It is approximately 9-10 hours’ drive from Kampala to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park on road transport and a distance of 550 kilo meters.

When you’re in queen Elizabeth national park, you can still access Bwindi impenetrable forest national park from Mweya via Ishasha sector, the distance about 5-6 hours’ drive to reach Kihihi then Buhoma sector in the south of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. Along the way you will have an opportunity to see the tree climbing lions that are found in Ishasha sector of queen Elizabeth national park.

From lake Mburo national park via Mbarara town to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park it is approximately about 6-7 hours on road transport on a 4×4 vehicle.
