If you’re looking for a quieter and less crowded option to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the Rongai Route is the perfect choice. Unlike the popular Machame and Marangu routes, which are often busy with trekkers, the Rongai Route offers a more tranquil hiking experience. In this blog, we will explore why the Rongai Route is becoming increasingly popular and what you can expect when choosing this route.
The Rongai Route begins on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border, and is one of the less frequented routes on the mountain. It is typically completed in 6-7 days, making it a moderately long trek. The route is often less crowded than the Machame or Marangu routes, providing trekkers with a more peaceful and solitary experience. Due to its location on the northern side of the mountain, the Rongai Route also provides different views and landscapes compared to the more popular routes.
One of the main advantages of the Rongai Route is that it is less crowded, which makes it perfect for those who want a quieter and more private hiking experience. This route also offers an easier ascent compared to other paths, with gradual slopes and fewer steep sections. While the Rongai Route is not as scenic as the Machame or Lemosho routes, it still offers beautiful views, including vistas of the Kenyan plains and views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit from the northern side.
Despite being easier in terms of slope, the Rongai Route does present some challenges. Due to its location and route design, climbers don’t have as much opportunity for acclimatization. While the ascent is gradual, the route’s shorter duration may not provide enough time to properly adjust to the altitude. Trekkers need to be mindful of altitude sickness and follow proper acclimatization procedures.
For those who prefer a more serene climb, the Rongai Route offers a unique approach to the summit. The route reaches the summit from the north side, which is less traversed by climbers, making it an ideal choice for those seeking an alternative experience. The summit day is typically long and requires an early start, but the reward of reaching Uhuru Peak is well worth the effort.
The Rongai Route is a fantastic option for climbers who want a less crowded, more peaceful experience on Mount Kilimanjaro. While it’s not as scenic as other routes, it offers a quieter alternative and provides a great chance to summit the peak. If you value solitude and tranquility during your climb, the Rongai Route could be the perfect path for you.
