Ruhija sector
Ruhija sector is one of the Bwindi impenetrable sectors that are situated in south western region of Uganda that harbors almost half of the remaining mountain gorilla population in the world. Ruhija sectors is situated in the eastern section of the Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park and it co-exists with other sectors such as Rushaga sector in the south , Nkuringo sector in the south plus Buhoma sector in the north that are home to the habituated mountain gorillas in Bwindi forest.
Ruhija sector is characterized by cold weather and temperatures that are as a result of the hilly terrain hills plus the dense thick forest that dominates the park. Travellers in who trek in Ruhija sector have high chances of experiencing for in the morning hours and in the night hours it is extremely very cold while as the day time has cool temperatures.
Why trek in Ruhija sector?
Ruhija just like other sectors it has its own uniqueness that attract a number of travellers to trek in the sector despite the existence of other sectors in Bwindi forest that have the habituated mountain gorilla families.
Ruhija is home to about three habituated gorilla families which are open for gorilla tourism throughout the year, such as Nyaguriro family, Oruzogo family and Bitukura gorilla family. The gorilla trekking in Ruhija sector is open to all travelers who would like enjoy trekking in Ruhija sector and the Uganda wildlife Authority offers about 24 gorilla trekking permits for the sector for all travelers who would like to go gorilla trekking in Ruhija sector. Ruhija sector a maximum of 8 people are allowed to visit to mountain gorilla family just like in other sector.
Oruzogo gorilla family, this led by one silverback mountain gorilla and it is composed of about 23 individuals that were habituated in 2011 up today the family is open for gorilla trekking to all travelers that visit Bwindi impenetrable forest national park throughout the year.
Nyaguriro gorilla family, the family as about 20 individuals that are led by one silverback gorilla and it has an exciting history of the family members and it was habituated in 1995 thus its name Nyaguriro A and B.
Bitukura gorilla family, this is one of the new gorilla families that was habituated in 2007 and it was encountered near a river several time where it used to residence before it was habituated for tourism and it has 14 individuals that are led by a mature silver although the group has about 4 Silverback gorillas that are very calm and peaceful.
Gorilla trekking permits for Ruhija costs 600 USD per person and by June 2020 there be an increase in the gorilla trekking permit from 600 USD to 700 USD Per person per day and the permit is not reusable once used. Travelers will allowed be allowed to spend a maximum of one hour to with the gorilla family from the time you meet with the gorilla family. The gorilla trekking experience just like in other sector starts with briefing at the park headquarters at 7:00 before travelers begin to trek and during briefing the travelers are divided into groups of 8 people then assigned to two park ranger guides who will assist and guide during the trekking adventure in the Bwindi forest.
Other activities in Ruhija sector
