7 days Uganda birding safari: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala/Entebbe to Mbamba Swamp then drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

 

Your driver will pick you up early morning after your morning break fast at the lodge, he will brief you about the safari and then drive to Mabamba swamp for the first Birding experience. Mabamba swamp is best known for harboring the shoe bill. While here, you will also encounter several other bird species. From Mabamba, you will continue to Queen Elizabeth National with enroute lunch in fort portal town. Embark on your journey arriving Queen Elizabeth in the evening, proceed and check in to the lodge where you will have dinner and evening stay.

Destination:  Queen Elizabeth National Park

Day 2: full day Queen Elizabeth national park

You will wake up early morning and have breakfast, this day, you will go a full day birding in Queen Elizabeth national. You will drive to park early enough where you will visit the best birding spots in the park including; Lake Katwe, Kazinga channel and Bunyampaka. In the morning you will explore Lake Katwe and Bunyampaka where you will spot several bird species including; yellow-spotted Barbet, White-tailed Ant-thrush, white-spotted Flufftail, Western Nicator, Grey-winged Robin-cat, Shrike-flycatcher, Brown-throated Wattled eye, Bush-shrike, Hairy breasted Barbet, superb Sunbird, Brown-crowned Tchagra and Bocagess Bush-shrike among others. After, you will drive back to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, you will go to Kazinga channel for boat cruise where you will be able to see lots of bird species or walk around the channel where you will be able to see lots of bird on the banks. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Destination:  Lake Bunyonyi

Day 3: Full day Queen Elizabeth

Have morning breakfast and today you will visit the Maragambo forest which is also the best spot in the park for birding. A walk in the forest you an opportunity to see lots of bird species. Including; Wattled eye, Bush-shrike, Hairy breasted Barbet, superb Sunbird, Brown-crowned Tchagra and Bocagess Bush-shrike among others. After the morning session, you return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, you will return back to the forest in search for more birds’ species. Explore the areas of the forest that you didn’t reach to during the morning session. Later evening, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Transfer to Kibale forest National Park

You will have morning breakfast and drive to Kyambura gorge for another bird watching experience. Kyambura gorge is habitat for wide range of bird species that you will be able to see in the forest. Return to the lodge for lunch and thereafter, exit the park and drive to kibale forest National Park arriving at the park in the evening, drive and check in to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Destination:  Kibale Forest National Park

Day 5: Full day Kibale forest National Park

A full day of birding in Kibale Forest promises to be an exhilarating and rewarding experience, given the remarkable diversity of bird species found in this lush and biodiverse habitat.
You will wake up early before dawn to catch the chorus of birdsong at its peak. A pre-dawn start maximizes your chances of spotting elusive species and observing birds during their most active period. You will be accompanied by an experienced bird guide with knowledge of the area’s avifauna and can help you locate and identify various bird species. Take on leisurely stroll along one of the park’s well-maintained trails, such as the Kanyanchu River Camp Trail or the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Trail. These trails offer excellent opportunities to encounter a diverse range of bird species amidst the forest’s verdant canopy.
Take a break to enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the tranquility of the forest. Find a scenic spot along one of the trails or at a designated picnic area within the park. Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks to keep energized throughout the day. Resume your birding adventure in the afternoon, exploring new trails or revisiting areas where you hope to spot species you may have missed earlier in the day. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 6: Bigodi swamp in Kibale forest national park

Wake up and have morning breakfast and after, drive to Bigodi swamp for another exciting bird watching adventure. Bigodi wetland is an excellent spot area, during the nature walk, you will be guided along boardwalks through the wetland, where they can spot a variety of bird species, including the great blue turaco, African black duck, and various kingfishers. The swamp is also home to several primate species, including colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys.
The sanctuary offers an opportunity for tourists to engage with the local community and learn about their conservation efforts and sustainable livelihood initiatives. Revenue generated from tourism activities at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is often reinvested into community development projects, helping to support both conservation efforts and the local economy. Return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon return to the swamp for more bird watching. Explore the areas you haven’t reached, to see more birds. Later evening, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Drive back to Kampala

The last day of the tour, you will wake up and have morning breakfast and thereafter, check out of lodge and embark on your journey back to Kampala, en-route you will stop at the equator for a photoshoot, continue to Kampala arriving in the afternoon, have lunch and the driver will drop you off either at your hotel or at the airport in time for your departure flight back home.
