14 Days Uganda Birding Tour: Detailed Itinerary

 Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe International Airport

Your safari driver guide will meet you Upon arrival at the Entebbe international Airport, depending on your time of arrival, he will pick you up and transfer you to hotel for your overnight stay. If you arrive a bit early, you may go on a brief safari around Entebbe where you will visit some of the places including; Botanical gardens, where you will encounter the Orange Weaver among other bird species or Visit Uganda wildlife education Centre where you will be able to see some bird species. After, you will continue to the lodge where you will check in for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Visit To Mabamba Swamp then Transfer to Lake Mburo

The driver guide will pick you up after your morning breakfast at the hotel and drive to Mabamba Swamp where you will be able to see several bird species including; including the weavers that can be spotted easily on your way. You will also encounter the African black headed Oriole, Black Bishop among others. You will also take boat cruise in search for the shoe bill stork and several other aquatic birds like the Malachite King fisher, Black Crake, Purple and Squacco Herons, the Purple Swampen among others. After, continue with the drive to Lake Mburo National Park with enroute lunch arriving the park in the evening, proceed and check in to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Discouver Lake Mburo

After morning breakfast, drive to the park where you will do game drive, the park is the small but rich in wildlife and several bird species. You will encounter several animals including; the Zebras, impalas, Elands, Buffalos, Giraffes, hippos, water bucks among others. While on the game drive, you will also see several bird species like the Red-faced Barbet, Bare faced Go away bird, Pied Kingfisher, Papyrus gonolek, African Wattle lapwing. Black belled Bustard, Blue breasted Kingfisher among others. Have lunch and in the afternoon, you go on a boat in lake Mburo where you will see several water birds including the shoebill, western tinkerbird, African finfoot, Senegal Lapwing, Tabora Cisticola among others.
Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 4: Transfer from lake Mburo to Kisoro

After morning breakfast, check out of the lodge and drive to Kisoro enroute, you will visit Ecuya forest where you will se able to see several Albertine rift endemics and other forest bird species. Continue to the lodge where you will have dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Mgahinga Birding National Park

Have morning breakfast and after, drive to Mgahinga Gorilla national park and visits sabinyo and the gorge where you will be able to see lots of bird species including the Rwenzori Turaco, stripe-breasted Tit, Shelly’s Crimson wing, Rwenzori Batis, Kivu ground Thrush, double-collared sunbird, Speckled mouse bird, Paradise flycatcher, Ibis, Speckled Mouse birds, Fire Finch Stonechat, Waxbills, Grey Capped Warbler, Archer’s robin chat, Blue-headed coucal, Black Kite, Pin-tailed whydah among others. Return to the lodge for lunch and go Golden monkey tracking with the opportunity to see several other bird species. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 6: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Wake up and have morning breakfast. Thereafter, drive to Queen Elizabeth national park via the Ishasha sector famous for the tree climbing lions. On a lucky day, you will be able to spot them hanging on trees while closing gaping at pry below them. The park is popular birding destination with over half of the Uganda’s bird species recorded here. The park is also a home to several mammal species including the four of the big five animals of Africa. Lons, elephants, Buffalos, Hyenas, Topis, Leopard, Gazelles, oribi among other. Bird species in the park include; the Senegal Lap wing, Black-crowned Lapwing, African Crake, common Button quail, Blue Quail, Bee eaters, Bul bull, Broad-tailed Warbler, Temminck’s Courser, Pink-backed pelican, Black-and-white-casqued hornbill, Western banded snake eagle,
Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Destination:  Queen Elizabeth National Park

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Have morning breakfast and thereafter, go on morning game drive in Kasenyi plains where you will be able to see several mammal species including; Elephants, Lions, Hyena, Leopard, Uganda Kobs as well as variety of Savanna birds like the Black-crowned Lapwing, African Crake, common Button quail, Blue Quail, kori bustard, kinfishers, eagles, herons, little Egret, Cattle Egret, the secretary birds. After the game drive we drive back to our lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will go on Kazinga channel boat cruise where you will several aquatic birds on the shores including; Temminck’s Courser, Senegal Lapwing as well as Hippos, Crocodiles, cape Buffalos, Elephants and wide array of bird species. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 8: Transfer to Kibale forest national park

Wake up and have morning breakfast, check out of the lodge and transfer to Kibale forest National Park via fort portal town where you will have a stop over lunch where you will also spot some bird species enroute. On arrival, you will drive to the crater area for birding experience. While here, you will spot several bird specie including Great blue Turaco, Western tinker bird, Pittas, Papyrus gonolek, White-winged Warbler, Grey parrot, Black and White casqued hornbill, Olive long-tailed cuckoo among others. Proceed and check in to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Destination:  Kibale Forest National Park

Day 9: Chimpanzee trekking and birding

After morning breakfast, head out to the park headquarters where you will attend briefing about the rules and regulations for chimpanzee trekking. Then you will be accompanied by the guides to the starting point of the trek. Kibale forest is a hoe to 13 other primate species with the chimps being the main attraction. During the trek, you will encounter other primates including the Grey cheeked Mangabeys, Vervet monkeys, L’Hoest Monkeys, Red tailed Monkeys, Black and white colobus monkeys, olive baboons among others as well as several forest birds. Green-breasted Pitta, Western bronze-napped Pigeon, Many-colored Bush shrike among others. When you have the chimps, you will observe them for one hour and after, you will trek back to the park headquarters then to the lodge where you will have lunch.
In the afternoon, Visit the Bigodi Swant Sanctuary. This is bird watchers’ paradise with several bord species spotted here. Like the Blue turaco and others include; the Papyrus Gonolek, kingfishers Wax bills, Cuckoos, Hornbills, weavers among others. You will be accompanied by the bird guide who is well versed with this area. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 10: Drive to Fort portal town and afternoon transfer to Budongo forest

After breakfast at the lodge, drive from Kibale forest to the western part of Fort portal with en- route birding in Budongo where you will spot several bird species including the Luhder’s, African Black duck, White napped and Afep Pigeons, white-headed Cuckoo, Joyful Greenbul and many-colored Bush shrikes, Cassin’s grey flycatcher among others. Have lunch and continue to Budongo forest where you will check in to the lodge for the rest of the evening. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 11: Birding in Budongo forest

After breakfast, drive to Budongo forest for another bird watching experience. Today you will visit the Royal Mile where you will spot several bird species, including 2 species which are rift valley endemics which are the Illadopis puvelli and the yellow-footed flycatcher among other bird species endemic to the Albertine Rift Valley Region. Some of the notable bird species at the Royal mile include; Kingfisher, the Nahan’s Francolin, the Cassin’s Spine tail, the Fire-crested Alethe, the Dwarf Kingfisher, the Black-capped Apalis, the Blue-throated Roller, the Blue-shouldered Robin, the Hairy-breasted Barbet, the Blue-breasted among others. Return to the lodge and in the afternoon, drive to Busingiro area where you will encounter several other bird species. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 12: Drive to Murchison falls national and visit to the top of the falls

After morning breakfast, check out and drive to Murchison fall national park with en route birding where you will spot birds like the Ituri Batis, Narina Trogon, White Hairy-breasted Barbet, the Blue-breasted spotted green bull, forest Robin among others. Continue to Murchison falls national park via Masindi town where you will have your lunch. Embark on the journey to Muchison falls and on arrival, visit the top of the falls where the Nile squeezes through a 7m gorge before dropping down at about 45m below the devil’s Cauldron. This area is favorite spot for birds as they swing across the plume of spray and dance according to the rhythm of the roaring water sounds. Continue and check in to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 13: full day birding in Murchison falls

Have breakfast accompanied by the bird guide where you will explore the Savannah landscapes in the northern section, during the games drives where you will also spot several bird species and along the Nile Delta along the Nile launch cruise where you will spot several aquatic birds on the shores. Whie in Murchison falls, you will spot birds like Foxy Cisticola, Cliff chats, Western Violet backed Sunbird, chestnut crowned sparrow, Cinnamon Bunting, Red-winged, yellow winged and Green Pytlias, Black Billed Barbet, Grey headed and stripped Kingfisher, Abyssinian Crowned Hornbill, Denham’s bustard, shoe bill stork, Red- winged Grey Warbler, Spotted Morning-Thrush, pennant-winged Night Jars, the Buff-bellied Warbler, Brice’s green pigeon, Chestnut Crowned Sparrow Weaver,

Day 14: Departure
